Do you know a fellow CALBO member deserving of recognition? Here’s your chance to make that happen! Nominations are now accepted for six awards presented annually for active and dedicated CALBO members. Awards will be announced at the upcoming 63rd Annual Business Meeting in Hollywood. For a full list of past award winners, please visit the Awards and Hall of Fame page located on the CALBO website. 

Submission Information:

Applications will be accepted by completing the online application provided below. All submissions must include a cover letter, statement of qualifications and optional materials of support, attached as well.

Building Department of the Year

The Building Department of the Year recognizes an outstanding jurisdiction for its demonstrated leadership over the preceding year. As an organization of building departments, CALBO bestows this honor upon the entire jurisdictional team that works hard to serve California communities. Selection criteria is based upon achievement in the following areas:

  • Community Affairs and Service
  • Philanthropy
  • Innovation and Technology
  • Educational Achievement in Building/Code Technology
  • Code Development and Legislative/Government Affairs

Building Official of the Year

The Building Official of the Year award is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon working Class I members of CALBO. As a peer-based award, the Building Official of the Year honors a single individual who has shown exemplary leadership over the preceding year and overall career. Selection criteria is based equally upon achievement in the following areas: 

  • Departmental Leadership
  • Innovation and Technology 
  • Code Development and Legislative/Government Affairs
  • Community Development, Outreach and Organization
  • Service to Profession through Extracurricular Activity

Industry Achievement

Building industry colleagues are a significant player within the CALBO membership. Industry efforts are not limited to exhibiting at CALBO evets, but rather working to serve and promote the building and code official profession. CALBO honors a standout industry partner each year with the Industry Achievement Award. Selection criteria is based equally upon achievement in the following areas: 

  • Service to CALBO Membership
  • Development and Facilitation of Education
  • Innovation and Technology
  • Support to Local Government
  • Philanthropy

Fire Official of the Year

CALBO applauds the efforts of our fire service professionals through recognition as the Fire Official of the Year. Realizing that public and building safety is a shared responsibility with fire officials, CALBO works hard to collaborate whenever possible as an association of local governments. CALBO honors an exemplary Fire Official each year as a partner and public safety leader within California communities. Selection criteria is based equally upon achievement in the following areas: 

  • Collaboration with Building Department
  • Community Affairs and Service
  • Innovation and Technology
  • Educational Achievement in Building/Code Technology
  • Code Development and Legislative/Government Affairs

Course Development Merit Award

CALBO recognizes the efforts of curriculum developers who work tirelessly to study, organize and create coursework for CTI classes through the Course Development Merit award. Recognizing the need to continuously in world class, innovative and unparalleled training for code officials. Selection criteria is based equally upon achievement in the following areas: 

  • Development of Curriculum Based Upon Demonstrated Need within the CALBO Membership
  • Development of Curriculum Touching upon New and Innovative Technologies within California Local Government and the Code Official Profession
  • Use of Visual Aids and Diagrams
  • Integration of the California Based Amendments to the Model Codes
  • Originality in Materials, Subject Matter and Delivery

CTI Educator of the Year

The efforts of CTI educators in CALBO classrooms are the cornerstone of our association. CALBO recognizes these efforts and contributions to our industry by recognizing a standout instructor each year. Seeking to educate the current and next generations of code officials, CTI educators develop materials and curriculum to facilitate to a diverse audience throughout the year. Selection criteria is based equally upon achievement in the following areas: 

  • Student and Course Evaluations
  • Originality in Delivery 
  • Demonstrated Commitment to Students
  • Multiple Training Days and/or Modalities
  • Creation of Professional and Innovative Materials
