The 2024 Permit Technician Career Advancement Academy will launch its second year during the 2024 Education Week in Burlingame, California on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 – APPLY NOW!

- Look beyond examinations or certifications to focus on advancing your career in building-safety
- Be a resource and support other department staff
- Be a liaison between the public and building-safety services
- Strengthen customer service skills
- Organize operations from the customer’s perspective

IMPORTANT: Applicants who do not have the desired qualifications listed in the packet are still encouraged to apply.

How to submit an application?
Step 1. Read the entire Packet, including the required curriculum and dates

Step 2. Complete the Fillable PDF Application Form on page 9

Step 3. Sign the Fillable PDF Participation Form (including your supervisor) on page 8

Step 4. Email the two completed forms to lherman@calbo.org by July 8, 2024

Step 5. Applicant will be notified via email that their application is complete and being reviewed

What is the Permit Technician Career Advancement Academy?

The Academy is designed to maximize the leadership and redefine the future of counter technicians, specifically their technical and interpersonal skills, to strengthen building department operations. Each academy participant learns vital information for their building department role, including how to best use their skills to support customers and fellow staff and evaluate their professional roadmap and timeline, such as long and short-term goals. This is an active engagement program with the instructors and attendees participating in shared discussions and coursework to learn from one another while building upon network opportunities for future support.

Who is the best candidate for the Academy?

The Academy is designed for those with a minimum of 3-5 years of counter experience and who have obtained an ICC Permit Technician certification. But, those without these qualifications are still considered to apply.

When does the Academy take place?

The 2024 Academy will take place in Fall 2024 at the 2024 CALBO Education Week: Burlingame. The Academy alternates between Northern California and Southern California each year.

Is the Academy in-person or virtual?

The Academy has both in-person and virtual attendance requirements. There is one in-person course that takes place on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 but the other courses will take place virtually. The curriculum dates and requirements are listed in the Academy registration packet. Approval by the applicant’s supervisor is required at time of application submission.

What is the Academy course prerequisites?

The following two CALBO courses are required PRIOR to the Academy start on October 2, 2024.

If you have not attended these courses, each are available on Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1, 2024 (either in-person or virtual attendance) at the Education Week: Burlingame.

Permit Technician Career Advancement: The Core Essentials (not included in academy fee) on Monday, September 30, 2024 (can attend virtually or in-person)

Permit Technician Career Advancement: How to Properly Screen Plans for Successful Permit Services (not included in academy fee) on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 (can attend virtually or in-person)

When will Academy registration be available?

Registration and details are now available. Application deadline is Monday, July8, 2024.

Is certification provided to Academy graduates?

Certification is not provided as part of the academy benefits. A plaque recognizing the completion of the Academy will be provided to each participant who completes all requirements.
