On August 13, 2020, the California Building Standards Commission approved the adoption of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) tall mass timber provisions which will become enacted on July 1, 2021 in the 2019 California Building Code. California joins Utah, Washington, Oregon as well as the City of Denver as early adopters of the recently approved 2021 IBC provisions that allow for taller and larger mass timber buildings than permitted by the current California statewide building and fire codes. Jurisdictions throughout California are already seeing mass timber projects which are sure to increase now that California has officially adopted the TMT provisions. In this webinar, attendees learn about the language and intent of the code changes related to tall wood building design and construction. These changes include new construction types with unique materials and fire resistance requirements; noncombustible protection of mass timber elements; protection of building features such as concealed spaces and shafts; redundant water supply; and other features. The history of tall wood construction in California is also discussed to provide attendees with an understanding of future trends and the impact on building codes. Building officials, inspectors, architects and contractors are encouraged to attend.
