Changes to the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) allow for construction of mass timber buildings with larger heights and areas than is currently permitted in Types III, IV, and V construction. This presentation provides an overview of fire design of mass timber building elements and assemblies, and protection of connections. New code provisions for special inspection of tall mass timber structures will also be discussed. This information is vital for the California Building-Safety industry since tall mass timber provisions have been adopted into the 2019 California Building Code (CBC) taking effect on July 1, 2021. Jurisdictions throughout California are already reviewing and inspecting mass timber projects, which will increase now that California has officially adopted the TMT provisions in the CBC. Building officials, inspectors, architects and contractors are encouraged to attend.
