This course is designed for experienced permit technicians seeking to elevate their building department knowledge and skills. An overview of state laws and the granting of authority are discussed to give context for the role of building departments in California communities. Attendees gain a more in-depth understanding of how the work of permit technicians interacts with other departments and agencies and learn basic plan reading skills to ensure plans submittals are complete for plan review and permit issuance. Examples of over-the-counter type plan review are presented for a better understanding of plan review techniques to assist permit technicians advance their career. After this course, permit technicians will know how to improve their work performance, but gain an understanding of how to better prepare for a long-term career in California building departments.
