Sacramento, California – Wednesday, May 15, 2024 – The California State Legislature has passed Assembly Concurrent Resolution 201 (ACR 201), declaring May as California Building Safety Month.  Their action recognizes the critical importance of promoting resilience and safety in the built environment and coincides with CALBO’s Leadership & Advocacy Day legislative event taking place today at the State Capitol.  

The passage of ACR 201 underscores the significance of proactive measures in ensuring structural integrity, disaster resilience, and public safety.  By declaring May as California Building Safety Month, the golden state emphasizes the important role local building departments play in the development and maintenance of safe buildings in our communities. 

“We take pride in the recognition received today from our California legislative leaders,” remarked CALBO’s Executive Director Dr. Matthew Wheeler.  “This resolution demonstrates an understanding of the important role our member professionals play in building a stronger California.” 

California Assemblymember Juan Alanis, representing State Assembly District 22, emphasized the invaluable contributions of building officials. “California Building Safety Month celebrates the dedicated professionals who ensure our buildings are safe and secure, promoting the highest construction standards and fostering a cooperative spirit between officials and the communities they serve,” stated Assemblymember Alanis. “As a former Sheriff Deputy, I saw firsthand the vital work done by building and code enforcement officials through emergency preparedness, response, and community awareness. I’m proud to recognize the incredible efforts of those in building and code enforcement.”

As California Building Safety Month continues throughout the month of May, Californians are encouraged to engage with their local building departments, participate in educational events, and prioritize safety in all building safety endeavors.  Together, we can build a safer, more resilient future for generations to come.
