In Memoriam
Mr. Ray Schuller

Article

CALBO is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a revered industry icon and Past President of our organization – Raimar “Ray” Schuller. Ray served as CALBO President in 1982-83, but has a lengthy history of service to our profession.

Starting his career with the City of Inglewood, he eventually earned the title of Building Official prior to moving to the City Newport Beach. Ray retired from Newport Beach and public service, joining the growing ranks of the third-party municipal consulting industry. He well served the west coast clients of both Berryman and Hennigar and Interwest Consulting Group for nearly two decades until his recent professional retirement.

Ray was not only a CALBO Past President, but he also served as President of the Los Angeles Basin and Orange Empire Chapters. Following his CALBO presidency, he also served on the ICBO Board of Directors for six years and was subsequently awarded lifetime honorary membership to ICC.

Ray earned his bachelors in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California and his masters in Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach. He was a proudly certified building official and plans examiner.

Those who knew Ray well knew of his childhood under Nazi occupied Austria and Germany, and his storybook meeting of his beloved wife Ingrid who survives him.  Together, they fled Europe as the world was at war and raised their family as true Californians.

Ray was a friend, husband, father and code official. He mentored many of the greats that are still at work within our profession and was a friendly and engaging personality to all. Our heartfelt condolences are passed on to the Schuller family as his legacy will long be remembered within CALBO.
