Changes to the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) allow for construction of mass timber buildings with larger heights and areas than is currently permitted in Types III, IV, and V construction. This webinar provides an overview of the allowable heights and areas for the three new types of mass timber construction, the research and testing directed by the ICC Ad Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings when considering height and area limits, and the unique materials and fire resistance-related requirements for the new Type IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C construction types. Construction fire safety requirements and owner responsibilities related to the fire resistance elements of the building will also be discussed. This information is vital for the California Building-Safety industry since tall mass timber provisions have been adopted into the 2019 California Building Code (CBC) taking effect on July 1, 2021. Jurisdictions throughout California are already reviewing and inspecting mass timber projects, which will increase now that California has officially adopted the TMT provisions in the CBC. Building officials, inspectors, architects and contractors are encouraged to attend.
