Special Message from Your 2018-19 CALBO President

Dear Colleagues,

As the holiday season comes to a close, the CALBO Board of Directors would like to THANK YOU for all of your support and dedication throughout the year. After all, it is our membership that does the heavy lifting and supports our efforts that benefit the larger group. This year, we’ve seen so many of our communities and members alike face some real challenges with not only natural disasters in their own communities, but personal setbacks as well. Yet since we have been communicating with so many of our members to support them in their time of need, it’s ironic how their stories give us hope and encouragement.

Capitol Corner Update

Last November, Californians turned out in record numbers to vote in 2018’s midterm election. Although this election had a few races that included obvious front-runners, many national elections were contentious, as their outcome would overturn the republican majority in the Senate and the House. This increased voter turnout in many states, including California, hoping their vote would make a difference both locally and nationally.

Cloud & SaaS Primer

We’re living in a unique time where our mobile phones are more powerful than our computers were ten years ago and the Internet in most of our homes is as fast as, for example, UC Berkeley’s Internet for their entire campus a decade ago. The realities of those facts has us living in a time where an increased number of companies are relying on the Internet to deliver their solutions. Many of the new software makers trying to sell you products will tout their savvy around topics like Cloud and SaaS.

Building Department Productivity and Technology
A Statistical Analysis

Introduction

Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize winner in economics, once wrote “Productivity is not everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything.” Productivity is important in general and its importance is not any different in a building department.

What is Software as a Service?

A quick definition of Software as a Service is as follows:

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a category of software services where the software application (i.e. permit tracking) is developed, hosted, and maintained by a third party organization and sold to a customer as a service, or utility. That is, you rent the software on a monthly or other predetermined basis. Your organization’s IT may still be involved but that is entirely dependent upon the vendor you buy from and the level of security you require. A SaaS product can be hosted in the cloud or on-premise.

What’s a Cloud?

Cloud is a term used widely today to mean “Internet hosted.” Cloud hosting is a kind of Internet-based hosting where the delivery of application and data comes from a cloud computing environment, or a cluster of computers together that represent a “cloud.” In a funny way, it means you don’t need to think about where the application or data lives — it’s up in the clouds. Underneath this word, there is a stronger implication for the kind of infrastructure (grid computing) that is often used to provide Clouds as a service provider. It’s worth noting that a “desktop application” can still be “in the Cloud,” as not all desktop applications connect to on-premise data sources.

Energy Code Ace’s team introduced a new user interface for nonresidential prescriptive compliance forms for completion and verification. It was an opportunity for students to learn what free tools, training, and resources are available for them and their building department!
