Special Inspections

The owner or the engineer or architect of record acting as the owner’s agent shall employ one or more special inspectors who shall provide inspections during construction of the types of work listed under Section 1701.5.

 

Section 1701.5 -  Types of work.  The types of work listed below shall be inspected by a special inspector:

 

  1. Concrete.  Exceptions for foundations for residential structures, foundations that require less than 2500 psi strength, nonstructural slabs on grade and site work that is fully supported on grade.
  2.  Bolts installed in concrete.  Prior to and during the placement of concrete around bolts when designed by an Engineer at high capacities.
  3. Special moment-resisting concrete frames.  For moment frames resisting design in California.
  4. Reinforcing steel and pre-stressing steel tendons.   During all stressing and grouting of tendons in pre-stressed concrete and during the placement of reinforcing steel and pre-stressing tendons for all concrete.
  5. Structural welding.  Except for single pass fillet welds not exceeding 5/16 inch, floor and roof deck welding, welded studs in  structural diaphragms, welded steel for cold formed steel frames and  steel stairs.
  6. Special moment-resisting steel frames.  During the welding of these frames.
  7. Welding of reinforcing steel.
  8. High-strength bolting.  During the installation of A325 and A 490 bolts.
  9. Structural Masonry. 
  10. Reinforced Gypsum Concrete.  When cast in place gypsum concrete is mixed and placed.
  11. Insulating concrete fill.   When used as part of a structural system.
  12. Spray applied fire resistive materials.
  13. Piling, drilled piers and caissons.  During the driving of piles and construction of  cast in place caissons.
  14. Shotcrete. During the placing of shotcrete or gunite.
  15. Special Grading. During earthwork excavating and grading per Chapter 18 and Appendix Chapter 33
  16. Smoke control systems.  During the erection of ductwork and prior to occupancy.
  17. Special cases. Work that in the opinion of the Building Official, involves unusual hazards or conditions.
